Teachers' Day

Teacher's Day.. What better occasion than this to start writing something new!

I studied in Harmilap Mission School, Kanpur for 12 yrs.. And three teachers assumed the Principal Office during this tenure.

Today, I go back to my school days, and list some important teachings I got from the school Principals..

1. Dr. N. K. Saksena Sir.. He told us that out of all the important qualities that a person should have, hardwork, punctuality etc etc nothing makes 100 (if u add up the letters), only ATTITUDE makes a 100, so does DISCIPLINE. So having the right attitude and discipline is the most important thing in life.  (This is when he had to come and talk to our class because we were way too much 'disciplined', :D).

2. A.C. Bowes Sir.. One fine day, in the year 2001 or 2002, during the morning assembly the national anthem was going on, and a student was tying his shoelaces. As soon as the anthem was over, Principal Sir pulled him out of the queue and shouted, “Even if a snake crosses over you, you’ll not move during the national anthem”. That’s an important learning from him, ‘When the national anthem is going on, you stand still.. no matter what.. NO.. MATTER.. WHAT …’

3. Meenu Gosain Ma'am.. Brief background of this incident.. This was our last year in HMS (2009-2010), and we were the worst class of the school. We literally did everything to make sure we had that title.. others were not even close!

Once I literally had a faceoff with the Vice Principal ma'am, she had punished me and still I went on to argue because....... . She was staring at me and I stared back.. This went on for over 3 minutes and she had to look away. Probably no student in the entire history of our school had done that. (Everyone in the school was damn afraid of her, but she wasn't allowed to beat someone, due to some past incidents apparently.) She then had to make a phone call to my parents and ask them to make sure I was on the “right way”.. Being good in academics doesn’t mean I’m entitled to behave in whatever manner I want...

Anoop Sir once called me and Himanshu Katiyar in his room and told, “Beta aap baki teachers ki baat rehne dijiye.. Akele maine hi aapko 15-20 baar pakda hai ya nahi..” (One of the rarest instances when he spoke Hindi..)

Bunking C++ class to play volleyball was a very common thing for many of us..

Yeeshu Gupta had been suspended once due to a fight inside the school premises and many students of our class including some girls had records similar to the abovementioned.. (The list would go on and on...)

So one fine day, Yeeshu and I did something, and since all the teachers were already fed up of our class, we were called to the Principal’s office.. There was an entire list of our ‘achievements’ and we tried to portray as if whatever we did in the recent past was a reaction of an action someone else had done earlier.. (We were the bloody innocent ones.. :D :D)

She heard all our arguments very calmly and just said that “Bheed me agar har insaan bas ye dekhe ki uske dono kandhe kisi se nahi touch ho rahe hain.. to kabhi koi dhakka mukki hogi hi nahi..”
(In a moving crowd, if everyone makes sure that their shoulders don’t touch anyone, there would be no chaos at all!)
So don’t try to justify yourself and blame others always.. If you correct yourself you can certainly reduce your problems if not resolve them all..

To these three dignitaries, and the entire (past and present) teaching fraternity of HMS, among the many others who have taught me the good and the bad..

Happy Teacher’s Day!!!

Respectfully yours,
Karan
